John Wick 3 review

Saw John Wick: Parabellum last night and left disappointed but I couldn't figure out why until this morning after I slept on it. No real spoilers here, but still...skip this if you haven't seen it just in case.

It reminded me a LOT of The Matrix Reloaded, sadly, in that both the fights were merely there for the spectacle and that the enemies were faceless, characterless, and endless. Like a video game.
Parabellum is all about fights for the enjoyment of the choreography; two of which were utterly spectacular, but the rest of the 2 hour 10 minute runtime was filler at best.

There was hardly any story at all. Picking up immediately from the end of chapter 2, Wick is on the run, excomuunicato with an open bounty on his head in a world that consists of 2 billion assassins, mindless crowds of passerbyers and no police or military in charge. There are no authories who find these discarded piles of bodies and react to the sinister potential of an underground society of murderers living amongst them. The people John Wick fights range from terrible at their job to having magical abilities and everyone can withstand at least several bullets and stab wounds before feeling any effects.

But hey, Keanu is always great and fun to watch. Halle Berry was amazing and so were her dogs. Lance Reddick is a national treasure. And it was amazing to see Asia Kate Dillon from Billions up there with all those A-listers holding their own.
The lore surrounding the high table and the society of assassins and its different clans is amazing. I just wish there had been more of it. And the movie I came to see won't happen until 2021 when Chapter 4 hits screens.

I give it a solid 3 out of 5.
